Collision Insurance

This coverage will pay for damage done to your car when the accident has been determined that you are the "at fault" driver. Standard collision coverage on an auto insurance policy will pay for all repairs up to the market value of your car. If damage exceeds the fair market value of your car, the insurance company may write you a check instead, essentially "totaling" the car.

Collision insurance is the most expensive form of optional coverage. However, you can increase your deductible to help lower the yearly cost. The higher you set your deductible, the lower the yearly cost for collision coverage.

Collision insurance is not mandatory in any state. However, financed or leased cars almost always require collision insurance for the lender or the dealership.

Comprehensive Automobile Insurance

Comprehensive insurance covers damage caused to your vehicle by an unknown entity or "act of God" even such as a flood, hurricane, fire, and any other form of natural disaster that is not directly caused by any person. Comprehensive insurance, much like Collision, will pay for damages up to the fair market value of your car. If the cost to repair exceeds a pre-set limit, the insurance company may just write you a check instead and avoid repairs altogether.

PIP - or Personal Injury Protection

Personal Injury Protection covers medical and other expenses that result from an auto accident, for drives specified in the policy, regardless of which drive is at fault.

MedPay

Medical Payments (or MedPay for short), is a type of auto policy that covers medical payments, funeral expenses, and lost wages resulting from an automobile accident. The policy typically extends to any passengers within the vehicle. MedPay also covers the policyholder for accidents in which he or she is a pedestrian. Similar to PIP insurance, MedPay covers these expenses/bills regardless of which driver is at fault.
