Liability Coverage

Liability coverage is the most basic form of auto insurance and is required in the majority of states. Liability coverage pays for bodily injury, property damage, and legal bills. Medical bills and lost wages are covered under bodily injury while repair or replacement of damaged property (other than your own vehicle) is covered under property damage. The liability coverage of the “at fault” driver will cover all of these items.

Each state has its own minimum requirements for liability coverage. These liability minimums are mandatory for any automobile insurance policy. Check with your local insurance agent or your state’s official DMV site for the liability requirements for your state.

Liability coverage limits are expressed with a set of three numbers. The first number represents bodily injury liability, the second number represents total bodily injury coverage per accident, and the third number represents property-damage coverage. So, a “15/30/10 liability policy” is defined as $15,000 bodily injury per person, $30,000 bodily injury coverage per accident, and $10,000 property damage coverage per accident.
